If you haven't heard what a cow project is, it is a solid and common vehicle for assisting the rural poor globally. It has been going on for a long time as a somewhat organized project, mostly propelled by the efforts of individual teachers and their classrooms, churches, organizations, and individual activists. It works and that is why we have chosen to add this project to the total stabilization of Rionchogu, in Kenya Africa.
Here's how it works:
- Donations are collected to purchase a cow.
- Cows are purchased locally, stimulating the local economy.
- Cows are given to a family (or village) in need. They milk the cow and have daily sustenance.
- The cow is bred, and those calves have calves, and so on - becoming a herd, or are distributed individually depending on the project and where it is.
GADL's cow project works on these same principles. The difference being that we work closely with the village council and leadership determining the most deserving family to give the cow to. This decision is based not only on financial need, but by that family's or individual's participation in the efforts to improve life in the village. The village leadership is aware when a family does not maintain the animal according to their agreement, and can revoke the decision at anytime and relocate the cow to another family.
